CMH Fashion Week Recap

The Charles Penzone Salons was honored to be Title Sponsors for this year's CMH Fashion Week, which mimics New York Fashion Week with an entire week full of fashion events, and concluding with two seperate fashion shows: The CMH Fashion Week Bridal Show, and the CMH Fashion Week Finale Show. Mother Daughter Spa Day Participant Spotlight: Meet Rachel Barber

Rachel Barber will be attending Charles Penzone Salons' Mother Daughter Spa Day for the third year, and is really looking forward to that haircut and style!

Rachel, almost 16, was born with a disorder called Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB for short). EB is a skin disorder that makes Rachel's skin very fragile and causes blisters and wounds all over her body. EB is not contagious, but it will require Rachel to wear full body bandages to protect her skin and to promote healing. Despite having this debilitating disorder all her life, Rachel lives her life like a normal teenager. She is even in the process of getting her driver's license!

Get to know Rachel:

What hobbies do you have?
Rachel: Reading, listening to music, hanging out with my friends, and watching TV

What is your favorite class?
Rachel: Math

What inspires you?
Rachel: Music!

We're looking forward to seeing Rachel and her mother again in a few weeks!

The End of Winter Beauty Kit

Your winter boots have been replaced mid-season, you started taking vitamin D supplements, and you have finished three different television series on Netflix. That’s right, it’s March, it’s still Winter, and everyone is (still) miserable. “But it’s March” you say? We know, but Punxsutawney Phil DID predict six more weeks of Winter, so we’ve put together a snowmergency kit for some Winter hair and skin revival. We can see the light at the end of that tunnel we call Winter, and we’re going to see this season through looking fab.

A WINTER SKIN GUIDE

Winterproof your skin by doing this simple tasks below:

•    To ward off dryness, cleanse your face just once a day. We recommend doing a face cleanse at night, and a simple rinse in the morning.

•    Alcohol dries the skin, so during the cold months, keep products with high levels of alcohol on the shelf. Exfoliate your body and face only once a week with a gentle scrub or a washcloth.

•    Take short showers. Over-bathing can strip the body of its oh-so-important natural oils.

•    Moisturize! Lather up at least twice a day to combat dryness. The dryer the skin, the thicker the moisturizer.

Your Winter Look:
Jade, esthetician at MAX The Salon in the Short North, created this look to keep you looking bright using the Youngblood makeup line we carry in the salons.

Brighten up your eyes with a wash of Platinum show from the Starlet palette. Smudge black shadow or black kohl pencil along the top lash line for a sultry, sophisticated look. Finish this with a pop of color in the lips and cheeks. Try Youngblood gloss in Siren for a deep berry shine, and a Temptress pressed mineral blush.

AN END OF WINTER HAIR GUIDE
Keep your tresses in check by following a few pointers:
•    Shower less. Much like winter skin care, showering less keeps your hair hydrated and healthy.

•    Take a break from the heat. Avoid blow-drying your hair to avoid that static mess. Take it a step further, and avoid heat tools as a whole. Not only do they dry your hair out, but they can cause breakage.

•    Use a leave-in conditioner to lock moisture in. It truly is a great product for a quick fix!

•    Color your hair for the transitioning season! Have some fun with the end of winter/beginning of spring by changing your color up! Consider burgundy, reddish brown, or a fun ombre for starters!

Your end of winter hair product lineup. All products available for purchase in The Charles Penzone Family of Salons:

Davines MoMo Shampoo + Conditioner: Its particularly rich formula has been created to deeply moisturize dry, dehydrated hair, making it soft, silky and full of body without weighing it down.

Alterna Bamboo Luminous Shine Mist - A sheer styling mist that gives hair instant polish and shine for lackluster locks.

MOROCCANOIL® Intense Hydrating Mask- Great for dry, damaged, or thick hair, this hydrating mask contains oil–rich formulas to deeply hydrate and condition your hair, while dramatically improving hair’s texture, elasticity, shine and manageability.

HAIR

IT’S ALL ABOUT THE COLOR RED
If you have been looking for a change with your hair color for the Holiday, RED is the way to go.  From the runways in New York, Paris and Japan, RED is everywhere and we don’t see it fading any time soon! Go big, go bold and go RED for the Holidays! We recommend our new color line Essensity to achieve rich red and burgundy hues.

HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR STYLES

Just because you aren’t walking the red carpet doesn’t mean you can’t look and feel as if you are. Hollywood Glamour is a forever classic look and a simple way to make a great dress AMAZING! This is an ideal style if you are looking to soften your shoulders in a strapless dress. Feel as if you are going to be walking the red carpet when you leave any Charles Penzone Salon after a Special Event Style.  When done by the pros, this type of look is sure to last all night!

SIMPLE & SLEEK STYLES

Just because the Holidays are often busy and big doesn’t mean your look has to be. Whether you have long or short hair, simple and sleek is a great look that can transfer from day to night when paired with the right haircut and color. To discover your simple and sleek look, first start by coming in to see us for an incredible haircut and color.  When you start with a great foundation, the sleek look really can be simple!

MAKEUP

BOLD BROWS
Dark, dramatic and full eyebrows are taking center stage this season. We started to see trends of this in the fall, but plan on this look sticking around through winter, too. To help get this look, let your brows grow in a bit to give them a thicker, more defined look. This sounds scary, but just be sure to schedule your eyebrow arch appointment with your favorite Charles Penzone esthetician to achieve the perfect shape.

To help maintain your new bold brows, consider taking home our Youngblood Artiste.

INTENSE EYES
Who says that once you start to grow up you have to stay away from glitter?! This holiday, hues of gold, silver, bronze and gunmetal gray are the colors to embrace for that trend-right Holiday look. If a classic look is more your style don’t be shy, after all, the holidays only come once a year be sure to play up your eyes and embrace these colors! Finish any of these looks with a set of flirty faux lashes.  You really can't go wrong!

To make getting ready for those holiday parties worry-free, schedule a Makeup Lesson & Application to learn which hue is best for you. Better yet, leave the trouble to our team and pamper yourself with a Airbrush Makeup Application.  Your skin will have a dewy, sexy glow that will last all night!

LOVELY LIPS
The key to making any style look finished is the perfect lip color! Put the finishing touch on your look with RED lips, a sure fire way to ring in the holidays with a kiss. For those that are bold, consider going for a rich colored lipstick like Vixen by Youngblood followed with a high shine lipgloss. For those that want a more flirty lip, consider Kranberry by Youngblood or a tinted lip balm.

Hot Weather. Hot Tips. Summer Hair & Makeup 101.

Our Hair and Skin Creative Teams have collaborated to give you Hot Weather, Hot Tips 101.  This is the complete guide to keeping your tresses tamed and your skin in great shape all season!

HAIR:

Your little locks are just as sensitive to the sun as your skin.  Before hitting the sun or pool this summer, don’t just apply SPF to your skin.  Pay attention to your locks!  And, give it the love it needs after a run in with sun to make sure it looks healthy and vibrant.  Follow this hair care ritual and your locks will sail through summer in great condition and frizz free.

Pre-Sun:

Wet your hair until it’s damp with a little H₂0 and slather on conditioner before hopping in the pool. By filling your hair’s cuticle with conditioner, chemicals will be less likely to seep in. This is particularly important for blondes.  Great “go-to” conditioners are L’anza Trauma Treatment or Schwarzkopf Rescue Repair.

Use a UV protectant spray prior to and during sun exposure.  New L’anza Swim & Sun Daily UV Protector (found in the L’anza Swim & Sun Vacation Survival Kit) is your best bet.  This product will help prevent your color from fading- making your hair color and highlights stay bright and beautiful.

Post Sun Cleansing:

The shampoo and conditioner in the L’anza Swim & Sun kit is theperfect prescription for hair damaged by UV rays, heat, chlorine or hard water.  Use a shampoo (L’anza Swim & Sun Daily Chelating Shampoo) that clarifies and a conditioner (L’anza Swim & Sun Daily Hydrating Conditioner) that hydrates without causing build-up.  For added moisture, make sure you rinse your hair with cool water to seal the cuticle.  (Trust us, your hair will drink it right up.  Which leads to our next point….)

Post Sun Moisturizing:

Restore the condition of your hair with a quick visit to your favorite hair professional. Hair regularly exposed to the sun needs regular deep conditioning treatments and moisture replenishment.  For just $10 bucks, you can get a great Deep Conditioning Treatment.  If you’re springing for the Rolls Royce of conditioning, go for the Alterna Caviar Rejuvenation Treatment.  This revolutionary, three-step conditioning system minimizes the visible signs of aging by repairing and reconditioning hair damaged by chemical, mechanical, and environmental elements. ($95.)  Whatever your choice, your hair will thank you.

If an at home remedy is more your thing, try MoroccanOil Intense Hydrating Mask or DevaCurl Heaven in Hair IntenseMoisture Treatment (especially if you’re a girl with curls!)

Styling for Summer:

Summer is NOT the time to skimp on haircuts.  Summer sun can rob moisture from your tresses, so make sure you have your ends trimmed every 4-6 weeks during the summer months. When your ends are fizzy, it’s a sure sign that they are either damaged, split or both.  Don’t go there.

Are you a girl with curl?  This easy DevaCurl Set It Free Moisture Lock can be used on wet or dry hair.  Use this spray to end frizz while adding 24-48 hours of moisture to your luscious locks!

NEW ALTERNA Bamboo Smooth Styling Lotion & Bamboo Smooth Anti-Humidity Hair Spray is the dynamic duo to combat the humidity and achieve an amazing style!  The lotion makes hair sleek and shiny while fighting flyaways while the flexible-hold hairspray locks out frizz while locking in style!  These products extend the life of a blowout so you’ll look FABULOUS all day!

If you’re spending the summer months lounging by the pool, Philip Pelusi Phyto-Life P2 Brilliant Hair Anti-Frizz Sun Guard is your new pool accessory.  Use Brilliant Hair on wet or dry hair, before or after styling.  This must-have smoothes frizzies, strengthens hair and adds shine.  It also doubles as a sun guard; sunscreen for your hair!

SKIN:

The secrets to fabulous looking skin this summer have been unlocked by the Skin Creative & Training Team.  Follow these few tips.  Your skin will thank you.

Pre-Sun:

No surprise, sunscreen is your best weapon to protect your skin from the sun.   Use an SPF of at least 30 and reapply every 2-3 hours.  Jan Marini Skin Research Antioxidant Daily Face Protectant (phew!) is a waterproof and sweatproof sun protector with SPF 30 that can be used on your face AND body.  This sun protector has microsponges to absorb sweat and oil and keep the protection in place.  It is light, oil-free and won’t clog your pores!  Adios Coppertone, hello Miss Marini!

For a little color with your sunscreen, try a tinted moisturizer with SPF.  YOUNGBLOOD MINERAL COSMETICS’ Mineral Radiance Moisture Tint is an easy way to forgo foundation when the temperature rises.  This barely-there, breathable product contains titanium dioxide for broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection.

Post Sun Cleansing:

So, you’ve been poolside and your skin feels a little crispified?  What to do next?  Rid yourself of those dead skin cells and restore your smooth, silky skin with Jan Marini Skin Research Biogycolic Resurfacing Body Scrub.  For your face, be sure to gently exfoliate (we LOVE Bioelements Measured Micrograins!) Both products will enhance overall skin smoothness and will keep your skin hydrated and glowing.

Forgo microdermabrasion during the summer; instead have a facial like the Vitamin Firming Facial or the Deluxe Papaya Facial.  Both services are available at The Grand Salons and use enzymes to slough off dead skin.  In the case of the Vitamin Firming Facial, vitamin C is infused to brighten and tighten.  Also, keep the V-Neck Firming Masque in mind for your sun-sensitive décolleté area.

Post Sun Moisturizing:

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.  This is the next crucial step in skincare. Extremely Emollient Body Crème (Bioelements), is an ultra-rich body moisturizer fortified with protective antioxidant vitamins.  This quick-absorbing treatment creme provides a 24-hour moisture barrier that builds with daily use. Aromatherapy oils leave a refreshing, clean scent on the skin.

Jan Marini Skin Research Transformation line with TGF Beta-1 is the perfect product to reverse the visible signs of aging (which are most often caused by our friend, the sun.)  This product stimulates significant collagen and elastin production to prevent scarring and pigmentation from forming in sun damaged skin.

Marvelous Makeup for Summer:

Don’t sweat it!  Literally.  Use Youngblood Mineral Rice Powder.  It’s a life-saver in high heat and humidity.  This product is applied atop your standard powder, prevents shine and keeps mineral makeup in place.

To keep eyeliner in place, try switching from a pencil to using a powder eyeshadow with an angled brush.  Just wet the brush, dip into the shadow, then press the shadow into the lash line and you've got it!  This will stay all day without melting or moving around.

Got eyeshadow that creases in the heat?  Prep eyelid skin with concealer then translucent powder before applying your shadow.  You’ll look hot even in the hotness.

Have questions or comments about our tips to look hot this summer?  Post them to our blog and we'll provide answers!  Happy summer!!
