Spring 2013 Hair + Makeup Trends

Spring has officially begun and the season’s new trends are in full motion! From the grunge/edgy styles, to natural parts, to matte textures- this spring has been dubbed the “off-duty/on-duty” hair season. The great thing about this season is that you can change things up.  One day, your look can be effortless and simple.  The next, you can play up your style with braids, stylish blowouts and accessories.  Same goes with makeup!  A fresh, flawless face is the first step, then bold brows, eyes and lips will help you be trend-on.  Keep on reading to get all the ideas you’ll need to feel fabulous this Spring!

HAIR TRENDS SPRING 2013

1) MESSY WAVES (THE MINIMAL-EFFORT LOOK)

This season is all about on-the-go, minimal effort, low maintenance looks! OK, but in reality creating the look does require SOME effort and great products! Apply Philip Pelusi Liquid Mousse or Bamboo Whipped Mousse to damp hair and run it through with your fingers. Add a little Bamboo Boho Waves to finish your look.

2) THE UPDO
Updo hairstyles have an easy-going feel to them. From the runway to Hollywood, low knots, looped/low ponytails and simple braids/twists are making their debut. To master these looks, blow-dry your hair straight with a cocktail made of L’anza Polyester and L’anza Smoothing Balm or Bamboo Brilliance Cream. Create a clean center part if you prefer and secure your hair into a firm ponytail at the nape, spritzing with a shine mist. From there, you can wrap the tail into any number of looks—a loop with the ends pointing up or tucked under, a round ballet bun, or the classic double knot—sealed with a shot of anti-frizz spray.  Too complicated to pull off on your own?  No worries, come see us!  (That's what we're here for!)

3) BANGS/FRINGE
A good fringe is never out of fashion. Faux fringes and super-short styles are what you’re going to see a lot of this spring and summer.

4) PIXIES

The pixie crop has never been more feminine. Wear yours long and soft or gorgeous choppy crops for some spring-time trend-led inspiration. For something a little more fashion-forward, sweep your grown-out crop to one side leaving plenty of volume at the roots with Bamboo 48 Hour Root Lifter or L’anza Root Effects and enhance your brows for a bold look.

5) BLOW OUTS

But 2013 spring and summer isn’t all about messy waves and low-slung ponytails – there’s always room for an ultra-glam blow-dry while curling the ends of your hair under for a glossy, expensive look. You can order this quick-and-easy service off of our Express Menu at any of The Charles Penzone Salons.

6) BRAIDS/TWISTS
This year’s styles are all about being creative. Opt for a twist, a fishtail braid or even a twisted braid to style up a lazy hair day.

7) COLOR
Color this season is either soft, natural and low-maintenance such as golden blondes and browns with ombre and reverse ombre- or even just a few peek-a-boo highlights. You’ll also see some wild sassy colors such as stripes of bold pinks, purples and blues or even full pastel pink or full purple color.

8) ACCESSORIES

Nothing adds an extra spring/summer twist to your hairstyle like a pretty hair accessory. A bold and colorful headband will make a messy up-do appear more polished or a classic printed headscarf will add a retro twist. A strong golden band will add glamour to a simple down-do- and who doesn’t love a little glamour?  Be sure to check out our new line of accessories now available at The Grand Salon at Polaris Parkway!

Lips and Eyes, Oh My, Oh My

Wearing makeup helps to accentuate our best features, such as our eyes and lips. The tricky part can be when it comes to choosing the right shades. Dark or light? Vibrant or neutral? Pink or plum? Worry no more! We’ve got the lip tips and eye tricks to have you looking your absolute best in no time!

Pucker up buttercup

•    A good start is to figure out if you have a more of a light, medium or dark skin tone. If you have the light skin tone, typically nudes, pinks and corals look good. With medium skin tones- roses, mauves and berries are the way to go. And if you have dark tones- browns and purples will look the best on you!
•    When looking for lip shades, always apply the color when you have no other makeup on. If the shade looks good on a bare face, it will look great once your makeup is applied!
•    Typically the shades that are 1-2 shades darker than your natural lip color always look good. In order to find this, apply the lip color on 1 lip and compare to the other bare lip. If the color is pretty close then you have a winner!
•    A good rule to always use regarding your lips is to go with a matte or cream light lipstick or gloss during the day and a glossy dark color for more of a dramatic look at night!

Eyes on the prize

•    When choosing the proper tones for your eyes, make sure you are selecting shades that best compliment your skin and eye color. These typically tend to be colors on the opposite side of the color wheel. For example, if you have green eyes, purples and coppers compliment green wonderfully.
•    If you are looking to make your eyes appear larger- you want to stick with light tones. If you want to enclose the eye or make it look smaller- go with dark colors.
•    If in doubt, always stick with natural and neutral tones. They look great on everyone and it’s hard to overdo it.
•    Lastly, just remember to have fun! Makeup, if used properly, is meant to enhance ones natural beauty, but not be the focus of the face.

Our group of licensed estheticians are experts at matching colors and tones to everyone! Come visit us and we will guide you to the perfect color palette! Schedule your appointment today by calling 614.418.5350 or going online. Hope to see you soon!

Makeup Artistry 101

What woman doesn't want to feel more glamorous in her day-to-day life? Wearing makeup is a way to add to that glamour, but there are some tricks to applying it for every-day wear that you may not know. Below are five makeup tips that can help you look your best every day of the week!

1. The right tools for the job.
Good brushes are essential to achieve any look, whether natural or all-out glam. They make the job easier and give you more control over application and blending. You won't see a makeup artist using sponge to apply foundation. Makeup brushes are an investment. They’re worth every cent and if cared for properly, will last for years. Using brushes also helps cut down on product waste. Your makeup will also last longer since it’s placed where you want it and not being absorbed by spongy material.

2. Highlight your best features.
Highlighting is a way to make your face and makeup come alive. Beautiful, glowing skin looks sexy and glamorous! This doesn’t mean adding a layer of disco ball shine all over your face. It's more about illuminating specific areas of the face, such as the tops of your cheek bones or the inner corners of the eyes. Another great spot to add a highlight is the Cupid's bow of the top lip. It not only looks beautiful, but makes lips appear fuller! The highlighter you choose should be the same as your skin tone or lighter and have a shimmery finish.

3. Don't neglect your brows.
It's no secret that great brows frame beautiful eyes. Everyone loves Kim Kardashian's sexy, smoldering gaze. Can you imagine if she had tiny over-plucked brows? Not quite the same look! Define brows using a suitable brow powder and angled brush. Youngblood’s Mineral Lash Prime can help tame unruly brows. Make sure you don’t wax your brows the day of an event, as this makes it almost impossible for foundation or shadow to stick to the areas that have been waxed.

4. Use your concealer as an eraser
Concealer is necessary for anyone with pigmentation, bags, blemishes, etc. It's also a great eraser! Did you ever wonder how the pros get such crisp clean lines around lips?  Using a small concealer brush along the outside edge of the lip line after lipstick has been applied will sharpen lines and erase any smudges. This is essential if you are using red or any dark colors. This trick also works around the eyes to clean up any fall out from shadow and to sharpen liner. Try Youngblood’s Ultimate Concealer and Concealer Brush for the best results!

5. Your canvas
Beautiful makeup begins with beautiful skin. So take care of it! If you don't already have a routine, talk to your esthetician. They will help choose the right products for the best results. It is also good to exfoliate 1-2 times per week. This makes your skin smooth and glowing. Makeup will adhere better and look smoother.

Did you know that you can schedule a makeup application and lesson at a Charles Penzone Salon? Our estheticians will apply makeup and show you how to enhance your best features. You’ll even receive a personalized color chart that you can refer to at home! Schedule your appointment today by calling 614.418.5350 or going online.
