The End of Winter Beauty Kit

Your winter boots have been replaced mid-season, you started taking vitamin D supplements, and you have finished three different television series on Netflix. That’s right, it’s March, it’s still Winter, and everyone is (still) miserable. “But it’s March” you say? We know, but Punxsutawney Phil DID predict six more weeks of Winter, so we’ve put together a snowmergency kit for some Winter hair and skin revival. We can see the light at the end of that tunnel we call Winter, and we’re going to see this season through looking fab.

Winterproof your skin by doing this simple tasks below:

•    To ward off dryness, cleanse your face just once a day. We recommend doing a face cleanse at night, and a simple rinse in the morning.

•    Alcohol dries the skin, so during the cold months, keep products with high levels of alcohol on the shelf. Exfoliate your body and face only once a week with a gentle scrub or a washcloth.

•    Take short showers. Over-bathing can strip the body of its oh-so-important natural oils.

•    Moisturize! Lather up at least twice a day to combat dryness. The dryer the skin, the thicker the moisturizer.

Your Winter Look:
Jade, esthetician at MAX The Salon in the Short North, created this look to keep you looking bright using the Youngblood makeup line we carry in the salons.

Brighten up your eyes with a wash of Platinum show from the Starlet palette. Smudge black shadow or black kohl pencil along the top lash line for a sultry, sophisticated look. Finish this with a pop of color in the lips and cheeks. Try Youngblood gloss in Siren for a deep berry shine, and a Temptress pressed mineral blush.

Keep your tresses in check by following a few pointers:
•    Shower less. Much like winter skin care, showering less keeps your hair hydrated and healthy.

•    Take a break from the heat. Avoid blow-drying your hair to avoid that static mess. Take it a step further, and avoid heat tools as a whole. Not only do they dry your hair out, but they can cause breakage.

•    Use a leave-in conditioner to lock moisture in. It truly is a great product for a quick fix!

•    Color your hair for the transitioning season! Have some fun with the end of winter/beginning of spring by changing your color up! Consider burgundy, reddish brown, or a fun ombre for starters!

Your end of winter hair product lineup. All products available for purchase in The Charles Penzone Family of Salons:

Davines MoMo Shampoo + Conditioner: Its particularly rich formula has been created to deeply moisturize dry, dehydrated hair, making it soft, silky and full of body without weighing it down.

Alterna Bamboo Luminous Shine Mist - A sheer styling mist that gives hair instant polish and shine for lackluster locks.

MOROCCANOIL® Intense Hydrating Mask- Great for dry, damaged, or thick hair, this hydrating mask contains oil–rich formulas to deeply hydrate and condition your hair, while dramatically improving hair’s texture, elasticity, shine and manageability.

Hot Holiday Hair + Makeup 2013

November is here!  And, like Starbucks with their lovely red cups and retailers all around, we’re ready!  Times like these are our favorite.  A change in the season means it’s time to transition your look to follow suit!  Colors, styles, trends – we’ve outlined it all!  From the 1940s ladylike era to the 90s punk and grunge looks coming back this season, there is a fashion movement for everyone. Risk takers can rock a wet look, partygoers can wear red lips and traditional ladies can show their attitude with a shade-shifting metallic manicure. Take a look at some of our favorites to see what might spark a little fire and help you on your way to feeling fantastic all season long!

‘Tis the season to enrich your hair color!  Warm it up with a few lowlights which can add a world of difference and dimension into your hair.  For brunettes, warm it up with a chestnut, auburn or chocolate brown.  Blondes can shift their shade to the new blush tones, or can add caramel, oatmeal or golden blonde with your natural color. Killer coppers and raging reds are still a great way to still get that pop of color as well.  If you’re thinking of a new hue, here’s a little pointer to help keep it fresh and vibrant.  Schwarzkopf Toning Mousse.   As your hair professional which color is right for you (trust us – critical first step), then, keep your color fresh just by using it!

Just a few weeks ago, we had the pleasure of having celebrity hairstylist Kim Vo fly into town to teach us the latest trends in color. We’re sure you’ve heard of Ombre, right?  Thanks to Kim, we’re privy to the latest color trend… Sombre!  Sombre is a subtler version for fall and winter. This service adds a few sun-kissed highlights around the face while still keeping the ends of the hair lightened. Think Victoria’s Secret hair.

While the traditional colors are all the rage, the entire color wheel is appearing everywhere on all hair types. Purple and teal pieces are peeking out all over and pink is ever-popular, too. Our L’anza Color line allows us to customize any shade you can dream up and if you are not ready to take the plunge, try Quikkies. They are non-invasive hair extensions that allow you to have a few pops of color within 15 minutes and they come out as quick as they were put in.

Thinking of a new cut in the months leading up to the New Year? Go short! It’s easy, sexy and sassy!  With so many cute hairstyles and inspirations, your options are unlimited. Try a piecey layered bob or a chic crop cut.  Rock the Michelle Williams, Charlize Theron, Kelly Ripa, Julianne Hough or whoever else inspires you. Be brave and have fun with it!
If you’re still loving your long locks, change it up by adding a fringe or bangs.  Face-framing fringe will make you feel like you have a whole new cut and style without needing to cut off any length. Changing your part can change your whole look. Parting down the middle can give you a boho style, or cutting long blunt bangs will bring new attention to your eyes.

No matter the cut or color, it’s the style that makes your look complete. Disheveled, tousled curls are all over the runways. Achieve this look with a curling iron or rod, and toss in a few curls from mid-length down. Flip your head upside-down and shake them out for that tousled curl. Make sure to use Davines Sea Salt Spray for the texture you need! Top knots, messy buns and braids are still all the rage this season. They are quick and easy styles that have great day-to-night versatility. To keep your bun current, it needs to be messy and textured. Alterna’s Caviar Hairspray will hold your style in place but still keep it effortless and chic. You can change up your braid with the milkmaid or “wreath” style.  Ask your Charles Penzone hair professional how to achieve this braided headband style! While you’re there, be sure to get information on other styles to try, such as a wet look, ladylike rolls, sleek hair and how to pump up the volume!

When it comes to pairing make-up with your new holiday hair style, try jewel tones or metallic eyes. We are noticing emerald, amethyst and sapphire colors on eyes this winter. To really make your eye sultry, rim your water line with a navy, plum, or black liner. Champagne, bronze, silver, gunmetal and gold are other colors that are the perfect shades for a festive party or a night out. Our Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics line carries several beautiful shades and liners to compliment every skin tone. Frame your face with thick brows, filling them in as needed. For your lips, paint them a red to compliment your skin tone, like ruby, cherry, or oxblood. This will make your pout come alive!
As the invitations come in and events mark up your calendar, let us keep you updated for all your parties and special events. We hope these tips and trends for the holidays have sparked the fashionista in you. Happy Holidays!

Spring 2013 Hair + Makeup Trends

Spring has officially begun and the season’s new trends are in full motion! From the grunge/edgy styles, to natural parts, to matte textures- this spring has been dubbed the “off-duty/on-duty” hair season. The great thing about this season is that you can change things up.  One day, your look can be effortless and simple.  The next, you can play up your style with braids, stylish blowouts and accessories.  Same goes with makeup!  A fresh, flawless face is the first step, then bold brows, eyes and lips will help you be trend-on.  Keep on reading to get all the ideas you’ll need to feel fabulous this Spring!

This season is all about on-the-go, minimal effort, low maintenance looks! OK, but in reality creating the look does require SOME effort and great products! Apply Philip Pelusi Liquid Mousse or Bamboo Whipped Mousse to damp hair and run it through with your fingers. Add a little Bamboo Boho Waves to finish your look.

Updo hairstyles have an easy-going feel to them. From the runway to Hollywood, low knots, looped/low ponytails and simple braids/twists are making their debut. To master these looks, blow-dry your hair straight with a cocktail made of L’anza Polyester and L’anza Smoothing Balm or Bamboo Brilliance Cream. Create a clean center part if you prefer and secure your hair into a firm ponytail at the nape, spritzing with a shine mist. From there, you can wrap the tail into any number of looks—a loop with the ends pointing up or tucked under, a round ballet bun, or the classic double knot—sealed with a shot of anti-frizz spray.  Too complicated to pull off on your own?  No worries, come see us!  (That's what we're here for!)

A good fringe is never out of fashion. Faux fringes and super-short styles are what you’re going to see a lot of this spring and summer.

The pixie crop has never been more feminine. Wear yours long and soft or gorgeous choppy crops for some spring-time trend-led inspiration. For something a little more fashion-forward, sweep your grown-out crop to one side leaving plenty of volume at the roots with Bamboo 48 Hour Root Lifter or L’anza Root Effects and enhance your brows for a bold look.

But 2013 spring and summer isn’t all about messy waves and low-slung ponytails – there’s always room for an ultra-glam blow-dry while curling the ends of your hair under for a glossy, expensive look. You can order this quick-and-easy service off of our Express Menu at any of The Charles Penzone Salons.

This year’s styles are all about being creative. Opt for a twist, a fishtail braid or even a twisted braid to style up a lazy hair day.

Color this season is either soft, natural and low-maintenance such as golden blondes and browns with ombre and reverse ombre- or even just a few peek-a-boo highlights. You’ll also see some wild sassy colors such as stripes of bold pinks, purples and blues or even full pastel pink or full purple color.

Nothing adds an extra spring/summer twist to your hairstyle like a pretty hair accessory. A bold and colorful headband will make a messy up-do appear more polished or a classic printed headscarf will add a retro twist. A strong golden band will add glamour to a simple down-do- and who doesn’t love a little glamour?  Be sure to check out our new line of accessories now available at The Grand Salon at Polaris Parkway!

Brows frame your face and complete any look! (Our recommended products: Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics brow palette and concealer.)

Bold lips are always in and have definitely been a popular trend on the runways! The bold hues accentuates the lips and makes them look bigger and fuller! (Our recommended products: Youngblood Lipsticks in Bistro, Vixen and Tangelo)

From black to teal, eyeliner has become the newfound essential! It's fun to play with different colors to make your eyes pop! There are many looks that you can achieve with our Youngblood gel liner! From classic winged liner to quick smokey eyes softly smudged. What's super HOT for Spring '13 is blue liner! Do a thin streak of teal liner not too extreme for everyday wear! Try Youngblood's spring gel liner in Lagoon! A beautiful teal gel liner with specks of gold! Very trendy!

Fresh, natural skin provides the perfect backdrop for this season’s best looks! (Our recommended products: Youngblood's Loose Mineral Foundation or Liquid Foundation.)

Not sure about what style is best for you?  Come on in and see us!  We'll help you define it!  To schedule your appointment, visit or call 614.418.5350.
