Mother Daughter Spa Day Member Highlight: Ivory Isaacs

On Sunday, July 19, 2015 from 3-7pm, nearly 80 young girls from nonprofit A Kid Again to enjoy a day with The Charles Penzone Salons. The spa day goes beyond just a day of pampering. Along with haircuts, manicures, facials, massages, and dinner, the event offers a safe environment for girls in treatment for life-limiting and terminal illnesses to support one another. It enables these girls to temporarily escape the medicine and the hospitals and be what they truly are – girls. It also gives their mothers a well-needed break and a chance to share quality time with their daughters during a few pleasurable hours of pure indulgence.

Meet 12-year-old Ivory Isaacs. Ivory was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor called Ependymoma when she was 5 years old. Within 48 hours of Ivory's diagnosis, she underwent multiple surgeries that resulted in multi-organ failure and a coma. Ivory spent weeks in a coma, and was not expected to live. But one day, she decided to wake up! A trech was placed and she set off to learn to walk, talk, and eat by mouth again.

Ivory did 31 rounds of high-dose radiation. Seven years later, she is cancer free, but not from the side effects that come with undergoing intensive treatment. Ivory currently sees many specialists, and has had over 50 surgeries to date.

One of Ivory's favorite days of the year is when A Kid Again takes families to King's Island and she gets a chance to ride the roller coasters. She is a lover of horses and rides as often as she can find a horse to ride. Ivory plans to "pay it forward" through her involvement in A Kid Again, and hopes that her story serves as an inspiration for someone going through cancer.

The Charles Penzone Salons is a strong advocate for causes that empower women and support children, and salon and spa professionals will carry on this tradition by donating their time and talent at The Grand Salon in Gahanna/New Albany. Since 1999, The Charles Penzone Salons has hosted the Mother/Daughter event, providing a day of pampering for girls with life threatening illnesses and their mothers.

Eyebrows
Never have to fill-in your arch line again! This procedure can add fullness and definition to thin or sparse eyebrows. Defined with ultra-fine strokes which simulate real hair, customized color is added to fill in select areas or to recreate the entire arch, which will frame your eyes and lend expression to your face.

Eyeliner
Always wake up looking your best! Permanent eyeliner colors can range from a softer, subtle look to a darker more defined result. Line the upper, lower or both lids based on your desired effect. Designer Eyeliner is available for a more dramatic effect.

Eyelash Enhancement
Eyelash enhancements create the appearance of thicker eyelashes. Permanent color placed in your lash line and around your lashes can make your eyes look brighter, younger, and more expressive.

Lips
Achieve instant fullness and definition to your lips by adding permanent color with full lips or lip liner. This service helps to correct the size, shape, faded, uneven and thin lips. Facial lines around the mouth are immediately camouflaged and lipstick bleed is eliminated.

Areola Restoration
Areola Restoration is a service offered to change the appearance of the areola. Often this service is performed to reconstruct the areola after a mastectomy or to help shape the area after areola reduction surgery. This treatment can help conceal the scars or restore the round shape.

Scar Camouflage
Scar camouflage is a service that minimizes the appearance of scars caused by facelift or other plastic surgery.

Mother Daughter Spa Day Participant Spotlight: Meet Katy Ferris

Each year, we're fortunate enough to open our to young girls with life-threatening illnesses. Named "Mother Daughter Spa Day," this event serves as a time to pamper these strong survivors, accompanied by their mothers. This year we welcome back Katy Ferris.

Katy Ferris was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at  three and half years old, and received chemotherapy that resulted in losing her hair twice. When her hair grew back and was long enough to donate, she went to The Charles Penzone Salon at Polaris Parkway to get the cut. To this day, she says that it was a wonderful experience and she will always remember it.

Katy is 18 years old, and recently graduated from Pickerington High School. She will attend Central Ohio Technical College and major in Web Design in August. This will be her third year attending Mother Daughter Spa Day and she looks forward to getting a pedicure every year. And, we can't wait to pamper her later this month!

The End of Winter Beauty Kit

Your winter boots have been replaced mid-season, you started taking vitamin D supplements, and you have finished three different television series on Netflix. That’s right, it’s March, it’s still Winter, and everyone is (still) miserable. “But it’s March” you say? We know, but Punxsutawney Phil DID predict six more weeks of Winter, so we’ve put together a snowmergency kit for some Winter hair and skin revival. We can see the light at the end of that tunnel we call Winter, and we’re going to see this season through looking fab.

A WINTER SKIN GUIDE

Winterproof your skin by doing this simple tasks below:

•    To ward off dryness, cleanse your face just once a day. We recommend doing a face cleanse at night, and a simple rinse in the morning.

•    Alcohol dries the skin, so during the cold months, keep products with high levels of alcohol on the shelf. Exfoliate your body and face only once a week with a gentle scrub or a washcloth.

•    Take short showers. Over-bathing can strip the body of its oh-so-important natural oils.

•    Moisturize! Lather up at least twice a day to combat dryness. The dryer the skin, the thicker the moisturizer.

Your Winter Look:
Jade, esthetician at MAX The Salon in the Short North, created this look to keep you looking bright using the Youngblood makeup line we carry in the salons.

Brighten up your eyes with a wash of Platinum show from the Starlet palette. Smudge black shadow or black kohl pencil along the top lash line for a sultry, sophisticated look. Finish this with a pop of color in the lips and cheeks. Try Youngblood gloss in Siren for a deep berry shine, and a Temptress pressed mineral blush.

AN END OF WINTER HAIR GUIDE
Keep your tresses in check by following a few pointers:
•    Shower less. Much like winter skin care, showering less keeps your hair hydrated and healthy.

•    Take a break from the heat. Avoid blow-drying your hair to avoid that static mess. Take it a step further, and avoid heat tools as a whole. Not only do they dry your hair out, but they can cause breakage.

•    Use a leave-in conditioner to lock moisture in. It truly is a great product for a quick fix!

•    Color your hair for the transitioning season! Have some fun with the end of winter/beginning of spring by changing your color up! Consider burgundy, reddish brown, or a fun ombre for starters!

Your end of winter hair product lineup. All products available for purchase in The Charles Penzone Family of Salons:

Davines MoMo Shampoo + Conditioner: Its particularly rich formula has been created to deeply moisturize dry, dehydrated hair, making it soft, silky and full of body without weighing it down.

Alterna Bamboo Luminous Shine Mist - A sheer styling mist that gives hair instant polish and shine for lackluster locks.

MOROCCANOIL® Intense Hydrating Mask- Great for dry, damaged, or thick hair, this hydrating mask contains oil–rich formulas to deeply hydrate and condition your hair, while dramatically improving hair’s texture, elasticity, shine and manageability.
