Mother Daughter Spa Day Participant Spotlight: Meet Katy Ferris

Each year, we're fortunate enough to open our to young girls with life-threatening illnesses. Named "Mother Daughter Spa Day," this event serves as a time to pamper these strong survivors, accompanied by their mothers. This year we welcome back Katy Ferris.

Katy Ferris was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia at  three and half years old, and received chemotherapy that resulted in losing her hair twice. When her hair grew back and was long enough to donate, she went to The Charles Penzone Salon at Polaris Parkway to get the cut. To this day, she says that it was a wonderful experience and she will always remember it.

Katy is 18 years old, and recently graduated from Pickerington High School. She will attend Central Ohio Technical College and major in Web Design in August. This will be her third year attending Mother Daughter Spa Day and she looks forward to getting a pedicure every year. And, we can't wait to pamper her later this month!

Needing some kneading: Massages aren't just for pampering

Needing some kneading: Massages aren’t just for pampering

It’s 2014, and we live in a society where all we do is rush around. If you are part of the working community, your days outside of work are spent catching up. For those who stay at home and tend to the family, your job is literally 24/7. Although many of us consider massages to be strictly for pampering, there are many medical benefits to getting your muscles kneaded and rubbed.

Massages reduce stress and tension. For those of us who would like a break from stress and can’t take a tropical vacation, a massage is the next best thing. Many times, stress leaves our muscles tense and achy. Science has proven that rubbing those muscles not only helps our bodies to de-stress, but it helps our minds to feel refreshed as well. Consider the time spent during a massage like a mini-vacation and see how much better you feel.

Suggested massage: Organic Candle Massage
As a massage candle fills the room with its luxurious aroma and warmth, the wax will melt at a soothing temperature, creating a warm blend of essential oils. A licensed massage therapist will utilize the warm oils to complete the ultimate massage experience, leaving your body relaxed and your skin nourished. After the massage is complete, the candle is yours to enjoy in the comforts of your own home. 1 hour duration starting at $102.

Massages relieve body pains.
Body pains are unfortunately a discomfort almost all of us have experienced at one point. Notoriously difficult to treat, soreness such as lower back pains can dwindle for days as we suffer under their sore curse. Massages have been proven to be a treatment that works for these pains. For chronic pains, it’s recommended that you schedule a massage once a week to keep you feeling ache-free.

Suggested massage: Deep Tissue/Sports Massage
The Deep Tissue/Sports Massage targets deeper muscle tissue to release tension, relieve stiffness, and soothe muscle soreness. The techniques used in this massage help improve muscle function.1 hour duration starting at $91.

Massages reduce blood pressure and boost immunity.
Massages are proven to increase our overall health, but especially benefit those with hypertension (high blood pressure) and low immune systems. Rubbing arms and legs can promote blood flow and increase immune levels, so if you suffer with these ailments, it’s beneficial to look into massages for health benefits.

Suggested massage: Full Body Therapeutic Massage
A licensed therapist will thoroughly massage your muscles. This relaxing massage will increase blood and lymphatic circulation and improve your overall well-being. Therapists can personalize your massage to focus on problem areas.1 hour duration starting at $80.

Here’s the rub down: Taking the time to take care of yourself may just save you from having health problems in the future. Knowing when you are under stress and knowing when to relax and take care of your body will pay off in the end. So what better way to prep for a long, happy life than a relaxing, therapeutic massage? Call us today and schedule a massage: 614.418.5350.

Kinesio Taping Now Available at Charles Penzone!

Beach volleyball champion Kerri Walsh wearing a new type of athletic tape.
(Natacha Pisarenko/The Associated Press)

Believe it or not, a little colorful tape can go a LONG way to helping deal with everyday aches and pains and even injuries.  And as of today, we’re so thrilled that we’re able to provide it to you with the introduction of the Kinesio taping method to our spa!

Remember seeing Olympian Kerry Walsh Jennings with a spider-webby looking black shoulder deal on the beach volleyball courts?  Yes, that is kinesio tape, and it can do amazing things!

Kinesio tape was invented by Dr. Kenzo Kase, a well-known Japanese chiropractor and acupuncturist who brought his methods of taping and the design of the tape to the United States.  It is currently used by chiropractors, athletic trainers, physical therapist, and massage therapist, just to name a few.

Kinesio taping is designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while allowing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion.  The tape also helps to alleviate pain and facilitate lymphatic drainage by lifting the skin in order for the muscles to heal.  Kinesio taping is used to successfully treat a variety of orthopedic, neuromuscular, neurological and medical conditions. Almost anyone can benefit from the taping, and believe it or not, 85% of those using it are non-athletes!

And now, one of our very own massage therapists is a Certified Kinesio Tape Practitioner (“CKTP”)!  Beth Granich, a Senior Massage Therapist and member of our Spa Advancement Team has completed the necessary coursework, seminars and has passed the written and practical examination and is now open for this incredible service!

Currently, the kinesio taping service is available to you in two ways:

Kinesio Taping Add On To Any Massage
During a 15 minute service, your problem area will be taped using the kinesio taping methods.  Cost of this service is $20, and each additional area being taped within the same appointment is $10 each.

Kinesio Taping and Assessment
As a 30 minutes a la carte option, your problem area will be taped using the kinesio taping methods.  Cost of this service is $40.00 and a massage not included.  Each additional area being taped within the same appointment is $10.

Think you could benefit from the kinesio taping method?  We strongly encourage you to give it a try!  Give us a call 614.418.5350 or hop online to schedule your appointment!

How to prepare for your taping:
  • Skin should be dry and free of oils, creams or lotions.  Beth will thoroughly swab the area with an alcohol pad to make sure the area that is being taped is properly prepped.
  • If needed, Beth will trim or shave the body hair in the area that the tape will be covering to allow for the tape to adhere best and work most effectively.

How to care for your application:
  • It is recommended to wait at least 30-45 minutes before getting your taping wet or engaging in vigorous activity.
  • Do not place direct heat on your taping including heating pads, hot packs, blow dryers, etc.
  • Kinesio tape can be worn while bathing, showering and swimming.  When drying off, pat or blot your taping dry.

How long will my taping last:
  • A taping can last anywhere from 2-4 days.  Please note that excessive or vigorous exercise and extreme heated conditions may result in your tape needing to be removed earlier than expected.  Please perform these activities with caution while tape is applied.
